Canada’s First Sustainable Supermarket

Yes, our partners were involved. Sustainable Energy Platforms is new. Our roots in sustainable energy run deep.

The Net-Zero Grocery Store

Supermarkets are one of the most energy-intensive retail businesses due to their large cooling and heating needs. Canada’s northern climate makes the need for reducing greenhouse gas emissions even more challenging.

This project included an aggressive goal of reducing 1,500-2,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases per year.

Participation in this ground-breaking design was just one in a series of firsts for JV partner s2e Technologies. In October 2018 construction wrapped up on a 40,000-square-foot store located in Stouffville, Ontario. The project incorporated many sustainability practices including an efficient building envelope and lighting, and innovative heat recovery. Solar power was harnessed through a microgrid with solar panels installed on the rooftop, facade and parking canopy.

The Sustainable Energy Platforms offering – involving the full lifecyle of Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Maintain is a natural fit for businesses like this, where energy forms an important part of operating costs.
